SENDUNG #13 vom 23.03.2023

“medientalk live” is a cooperation of the CIVIS Media Foundation for Integration and Cultural Diversity in Europe and COSMO, funded by Stiftung Mercator.

SENDUNG #12 vom 02.03.2023

SENDUNG #11 vom 09.02.2022

February is Black History Month, which is Black History Month in
North America. It has also been celebrated in Germany for several years to make the history, culture and achievements of Black Germans visible. There is still some catching up to do in the media. “medientalk live” is about how newspapers, radio and online media report on the issues of Afro-Germans and how it is
looks like with the representation of their perspectives or knowledge about racism. And how a group of Black women journalists started their own magazine, what they report on there and how they promote young talent. Host Nadine Hadad talks about it with journalist Celia Parbey. Among other things, she works for ZEIT Online and is editor-in-chief of the
RosaMag, an online magazine by and for Black and Afro-German FLINTA (Women,
Lesbians, inter*, non-binary, trans* and agender persons).

SEND #10 from 19.01.2022

“The violence has a migration background” (NZZ), “Rioting migrants” (BILD.de), “A question of failed integration?” (FAZ): Headlines from the first days of this year. In Berlin and other German cities, there were massive attacks on police and emergency forces on New Year’s Eve, especially in the Neukölln district. Berlin police released preliminary figures showing that about two-thirds of those arrested on New Year’s Eve in Berlin did not have German passports.

A political and media debate ensued about whether the riots were evidence of a failed migration policy or a failed integration of immigrants. This drew accusations from other participants in the discussion that conflicts were being culturalized here, and even more so that the thrust of the criticism was racist – which in turn triggered claims that problems in connection with immigration were being made taboo… And although it is now almost three weeks since New Year’s Eve, the debate and the debate about the debate continue.

Marspet Movsisyan talks about it with journalist Stephan Anpalagan,
Executive Director of Democracy in Action.

SENDUNG #9 from 22.12.2022

“Mazel Tov Cocktail”

A film about a young man who no longer wants to be forced into the role of victim as a Jew and as a Russian immigrant, even though he is, of course, repeatedly confronted with anti-Semitism. “Masel Tov Cocktail” has won two of the very prestigious CIVIS media awards across Europe. And you can apply now for 2023!
Nadine Hadad talks to the writer and director about the film, about the award, about
new projects.

SENDUNG #8 from 01.12.2022

“World Cup of shame,” “tournament of hypocrites,” calls for boycotts: The outrage over the World Cup in Qatar is great.

And indeed, there are many reasons to criticize the host country, because of exploitation of migrant workers or homophobia. In the meantime, however, there is also a criticism of the criticism. We want to go into this and ask ourselves why this World Cup in particular is so polarizing? Is it right to keep targeting Qatar for human rights violations right now and to condemn the fact that the World Cup is being held there? Or is the outrage hypocritical, does it show double standards? Is it arrogant and Eurocentric, even Islamophobic? In Russia, for example, after the annexation of Crimea and the bombs on Aleppo, the ball rolled out of the media with almost no accompanying critical tones.

We talk about it today – with journalist Burhan Akid From wdrforyou.

SENDUNG #7 from 10.11.2022

There are now over 4.5 million Muslims living in Germany. Nevertheless it comes again and again
that Islam comes across negatively in some media – namely, as a religion that is
backward, disregarding the rights of women or queer people, or violent
fanatics. Why are Muslims always associated with the same, often negatively tainted
topics associated? What are the implications for Muslims in Germany? And what does that say about our media landscape?
Nadine Hadad talks about this with one of the founders of the format “Date Perpetrators” Younes Al-Amayra.

SENDUNG #6 from 20.10.2022

Iran is experiencing a wave of protests that has swept broad segments of the population. Countless citizens are now openly calling for the fall of the regime. This reacts brutally; it kills, injures and imprisons demonstrators. How does the German media follow events in the country? How does the Iranian community in Germany view the way newspapers, broadcasters and online media deal with the issue? How has attention in this country evolved since the protests began?
We talk about it with Isabel Schayani, head of WDRforyou.

SENDUNG #5 from 29.09.2022

On the occasion of the Day of German Unity, we talk about East Germany in the media and a perspective that is often missing from the coverage: that of East Germans of Color. Because there was immigration in the former GDR, for example from Chile, Vietnam or South Africa, and East German society was and is not only white. Nadine Hadad talks about this with author and sociologist Katharina Warda.

SENDUNG #4 from 08.09.2022

Because people with immigrant backgrounds are still underrepresented in the industry and social diversity Diversity in film is stereotyped. This is how at least, said 80% of respondents to a survey of filmmakers conducted by the initiative. We talk about it with Esra and Patrick Phul, makers of the rap musical “Hype”, the first fiction series from COSMO.

SENDUNG #3 from 18.08.2022

In August 1992 hundreds of partly right-wing extremists set fire to a dormitory of Vietnamese, up to 3000 people watched and applauded.

The pogrom, which was directed for days first against asylum seekers and then against former Vietnamese contract workers, is one of the worst racist outrages in Germany’s postwar history. We talk to journalist and podcaster Minh Thu Tran (Rice and Shine) about what it means for the Viet German community today and the role of the media.

SENDUNG #2 from 28.07.2022

The second “medientalk live” is about cultural diversity in newsrooms.

The proportion of people with immigrant biographies in the media is much lower than in the population. What are the consequences, and why does something have to change? Marspet Movsisyan and Thembi Wolf from the New German Media Makers talk about this at “medientalk live”. A collaboration of the CIVIS Media Foundation and COSMO, sponsored by the Mercator Foundation.

SENDUNG #1 from 07.07.2022

The first “medientalk live” is about forgotten crises.

For example, the war of aggression in Ukraine has largely supplanted coverage of Taliban terror in Afghanistan. What are the consequences of this, and how is it received, for example, by refugees of different origins? Host Nadine Hadad talks with journalist and author Natalie Amiri.
